An historical market town in South Yorkshire, Doncaster is renowned for its horse racing, rich railway heritage and its wealth of Georgian and Regency architecture.
From existing archives, it is known horse racing was being staged in Doncaster as early as the sixteenth century and 1766 staged the first running of the Doncaster Gold Cup, the oldest Gold Cup horse race in the world.
Doncaster’s rail industry has always been at the forefront of the history books due to its locomotive and carriage building expertise with record breaking Mallard and Flying Scotsman being perhaps the most famous engines made here.
If architecture is your passion, we have the remains of the original Roman wall, Saxon church architecture and Norman castles situated in Conisbrough and Tickhill as well as a Mansion House dating back to 1749 – one of only 3 surviving examples in England.
From the very day the Romans founded the town as “Danum”, Doncaster has been a great place to meet, do business, relax and enjoy life to the full!
Where we are now
Nowadays, Doncaster is a place that’s growing…businesses, population, young people, visitors, students and… in confidence.
Our new Doncaster story explains what we have to offer, captures the essence of the area and will be what puts us on the map for all the right reasons. Our approach is both aspirational and rooted in a reality that can already be seen.
Building on our racing heritage, Doncaster Racecourse has developed into a major entertainment venue in its own right and each year hosts the St Leger flat race which is the oldest of Britain’s classics. In fact the town is a major equine centre with horses being bought and sold at bloodstock sales for huge sums of money. We also boast the Northern Racing College which is the northern Centre of Excellence for training in the horse racing industry.
Rail continues to be as important to Doncaster as ever before with more than 10,000 people already employed in the rail engineering sector with leaders in the industry such as Hitachi, Unipart Rail, Wabtec and DB Schenker.
In the heart of Doncaster CAST has opened as a £22 million arts venue and is the anchor for a significant and growing cultural and visitor offer that will further develop with a focus on quality family related activity. And certainly worth a mention is the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, the UK’s No. 1 Walkthrough Wildlife Park Adventure.
Looking to the future
Doncaster is re-inventing itself and has already delivered on its latest promises, which is why we are already looking at a prosperous new Doncaster.
By demonstrating a ‘doing’ attitude and engaging differently, Doncaster is benefitting from recent success with the completion of the new link road – Great Yorkshire Way which in turn contributes to the creation and development of iPort and the construction of a new National College for High Speed Rail, due to open September 2017.
Whilst Doncaster might not have a University (yet) it is in the final stages of establishing an advanced engineering and digital design University Technical College which ties in nicely with our strongest assets of advanced manufacturing, rail, construction and infrastructure and digital design.
And let’s not forget the development of Rossington Hall into a European Tour Golf destination and Tournament venue with a view to it holding European events in the next 5 years.
We believe that Doncaster has a fantastic opportunity to leverage and exploit its location and relationships as it has done for hundreds of years
Many places have the aspiration to be a city but with our public and private sector leadership, confidence and ambition…Doncaster already acts and influences like a city.
