The village themed, family extravaganza will be packed with attractions and entertainment.
Whether you’re a cycling fan or just looking for a fantastic day out, the exciting event is part of Doncaster's celebrations to mark the Tour de Yorkshire visiting the borough… and what’s more, it's absolutely free.
A large 18 x 12 metre marquee with terrace and a decking area will be the home of Café Doncaster, Yorkshire’s largest cycle café and the centrepiece of the Tour de Yorkshire Fan Zone on Doncaster Town Fields. Here visitors can sit down and enjoy refreshments from one of the food and drink stalls, watch the action on dedicated television screens and take a closer look at the work of Lucy Pittaway, the official Tour de Yorkshire artist.
There will be cake and crepe stalls, quaint food caravans, a Toppings Pie stall and even a replica steam train serving barbeque food, all designed to provide that homely village feel.
To keep people entertained between the Men’s and Asda Women’s Tour de Yorkshire races, there will be lots of fun things for people to see and do in the Fan Zone and on the finish straight on Bennetthorpe.
A variety of performers will be on show including musicians to keep people in the party mood, living statues including a bronze statue of a kitted out cyclist, a balloon modeller, an escapologist, stilt walkers, hula hoop cyclists and a magician.
There will be traditional fairground rides, games and stalls for children, interactive displays, including cycle powered machines which create bubbles, a water fountain and electricity…creating great fun for all the family.
Cllr Nigel Ball, Cabinet Member for Public Health, Leisure and Culture, said: “The excitement is starting to build as we countdown to the Tour de Yorkshire. Plans for the day are taking shape and it’s going to be a great occasion as we welcome the finishes on Thursday 3 May as well as the action flying through our borough on Friday 4 May too.
“Our local towns and villages are getting into the spirit of the day by organising some wonderful activities and parties along the route. Adding to these celebrations and excitement will be the FREE Fan Zone centrally located close to the finish line on Bennetthorpe. With its Café Doncaster theme it’s all set to serve up great homely food and drink and with a highly imaginative range of entertainment and attractions it will keep everyone entertained during what will be a fantastic day.
“There will be something for everyone from watching the thrilling race finishes to enjoying a fun day out with family, friends or work colleagues. If you can’t stay all day, why not use your lunch break to watch the women’s race and go home later after work when the traffic has eased by watching the men’s race. And don’t forget you can watch all the action on the Friday too as the races pass through the west of our borough.”
The Tour de Yorkshire is the start of a bumper Bank Holiday weekend of fun in Doncaster town centre. Friday, 4 May sees the return of the Delicious Doncaster Food and Drink Festival.
The four day festival finishes on Bank Holiday Monday, 7 May and star billing goes to one of the UK’s most famous cookery duos – the Hairy Bikers.
