Pretty Basra-Badh, local Paediatric specialist and owner of Edwards and Walker Opticians, passed her viva recently and, subject to a little more work, will receive her PhD in the coming months.
Passing her viva, which is seen as the final examination of her research, has been a long-time coming for Pretty, who has had to juggle studying for her PhD alongside running Edwards and Walker Opticians and mothering three young children. It’s a truly outstanding achievement which is a true reflection of her dedication and passion for the field.
Pretty, who was previously shortlisted as one of the top 5 Opticians in the UK, has been working on her thesis for nearly 8 years. The field she has been researching is of huge national interest, with no uniform approach to children’s vison screening across the country and varying degrees of quality.
Her research was built on a desire to see every child in the UK receiving a consistent and high level of quality of eyecare from a young age so that they can have the best possible start in life. It is hoped once published, her thesis will contribute significantly towards the debate within Government of reforming children vision screening throughout all UK schools.
Her husband Pete, who has supported her throughout her research and seen her through the highs and the lows said, “I am so so proud of what Pretty has achieved. To do what she’s done as well as running as business and being an amazing mum to three kids, all under the age of 5 – she’s an inspiration to people who want to work hard, achieve success and raise a family all at the same time! I can’t wait to see her receive her Doctorate!”
