A local clinical negligence expert has become the first solicitor in the UK to be accredited by the Law Society as a Catastrophic Injury specialist.
John McQuater, partner and head of litigation at Atherton Godfrey, leads one of the largest litigation departments in the area. He is highly regarded in his field and also holds specialist accreditation for both personal injury and clinical negligence.
Catastrophic injuries are life changing and can include birth injury or trauma, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, amputation, psychiatric injury and severe burns.
Due to the nature of the injuries and the devastating impact on people’s lives, the claims attract high levels of compensation, often in excess of £500,000 and can involve periodical payments to be made over a lifetime.
The complex award structure makes it crucial that the solicitor has the expertise to understand medical terminology and to be able to correctly value the claim so that it includes the loss of past and future earnings, the cost of care and rehabilitation, and any equipment or adaptations to the home, needed either now or in the future.
Commenting on the accreditation, Mr McQuater said: “These accreditations are important kite marks that give reassurance to those looking for a solicitor with specialist skills in a particular field.
It is important to remember that you are dealing with people when they are at their most vulnerable. It is a traumatic time for everyone involved and a time when people need to be sure that their solicitor has a firm grasp of the issues and has the skill and expertise to be able to help them obtain justice.”
