A Doncaster Council business grant scheme has helped over 29 businesses by providing support for new and existing businesses to grow.
Run by Business Doncaster and now approaching its fourth anniversary, the scheme works by offering incentives to businesses looking to grow or move into the area. In return, the council benefits from increased economic investment, the creation of jobs and the increased business rates income brought in by successful business growth. Since its birth in 2015, the scheme has helped to create more than 800 new jobs in Doncaster. Doncaster Council has awarded £1.5 million worth of grants ranging from £12.2k to £283k to businesses who have invested significantly in Doncaster, but will see a return of over £5 million in new business rates.
Companies based across the whole borough have benefitted from the awards which have been used for a range of different projects from attracting new inward investors, creating and safeguarding jobs, regenerating parts of the town centre and supporting local companies to invest in new premises, plant and equipment.
Doncaster Council’s Cabinet Member for Business, Bill Mordue said:: “Our business incentive scheme has been a tremendous success and has seen a number of companies benefit from funding which has allowed them to invest in Doncaster, create jobs and improve the local economy. As a town we are always diversifying and finding new ways to attract businesses and this scheme allows us to offer that bit extra - when it comes to businesses we are keen to ‘grow our own’, that ultimately brings benefits for local residents, attracts visitors and further new investment.”
Emma Shrimpton from Specialist Engineering Services, one of the beneficiaries of the scheme said: “We were amazed by the support Business Doncaster could offer us, Because we were moving into the area, boosting the local economy and creating jobs, it was able to provide funding towards both the move and modifying the access point to our rail operating centre so it could allow heavy plant access. The financial support came through very quickly and once we were engaged, we were able to access all kinds of other things too.”
Nicola Hall, director at Hall Fencing who have also benefitted said: “The Business Doncaster team has been very helpful, offering plenty of information and suggesting links with other local firms where there may be potential opportunities. We recently refitted our warehouse, so we will soon be looking to hire at least one new apprentice in our fabrication department. The support has played a huge role in enabling us to take these positive steps, and I am excited by how we will be able to develop more in future.”
