Dreambakes is celebrating a year in their café in Doncaster town centre.
Carol and Hannah Shekle, a mother-daughter team, opened their café, bakery and deli on 21st May 2018. From the start, they've always tried to bring something a little different to Doncaster, focusing on making high quality food supplemented by locally sourced products.
Since opening, they have loved bringing Yorkshire-made products and events to foodies. From artisan coffee and chocolate to halloumi and chorizo, everything has been chosen with care and used to maximise taste. The events have ranged from celebrating 100 years of women's suffrage, to vegan cheese tasting, to gin sampling! They've relished supporting the community by establishing a popular book club, being involved in a town centre forum, and enjoyed participating in town-wide events.
“The support we have received from customers is invaluable. For independent businesses, each person who walks through the door makes a difference. To show our appreciation of that, we treat every person individually and try to get to know them. That's one thing local business have over shopping online- we know who you are and can have a chat with you about your day as you unwind in the cafe,” said Carol, the mother of the duo.
Opening the café has been so much more rewarding than they expected, too.
“We have had opportunities that we never expected would come along- from local newspapers and radio to national TV interviews, joining in unique events we hadn't anticipated, and making cakes we couldn't have imagined!,” exclaimed Hannah.
In this next year they hope to build their support and community by continuing to offer food, events and products with a difference.
