Mexborough Market will become the heartbeat of Mexborough town centre thanks to the appointment of an expert operator, significant investment and a fresh and ambitious vision for its future.
In the next five years, approaching £500,000 will be spent by Doncaster Council and the planned new operator Market Asset Management (Doncaster) Ltd (“MAM”).
The council has allocated £393,000 to undertake a raft of improvements to the market and fish market. The money will be spent on essential roof repairs, external decoration, an internal refurbishment and important electrical works.
On top of this, MAM has allocated £90,000 for further improvements including redecoration, better lighting and enhancements to the outdoor market like new signage. A further £40,000 will also be spent by MAM over the contract period.
As well as these physical improvements, MAM plan to create a vibrant destination, improve the customer experience and provide a road map for the Mexborough community to become entrepreneurs.
Cllr Glyn Jones, Deputy Mayor of Doncaster, said:
“Mexborough Market is a social meeting place at the heart of the community. This transformation will build on this whilst attracting new customers. To achieve this, there will be significant investment made and we are appointing an innovative markets operator who will use their expertise to improve the customer experience and ensure the market is the hub of Mexborough town centre. There will be improvements made to the market building and plenty of new ideas to provide a nurturing ground for new and budding entrepreneurs.”
The vision for the Mexborough Market will see it complement the Masterplan for the town which is currently being worked on by the council.
The council’s Cabinet agreed to appoint MAM as the new operator of Mexborough and Doncaster Markets for a 25 year period last month.
