Legal Sector Apprenticeships

To mark National Apprenticeship Week 2018, local law firm Atherton Godfrey is highlighting the roles that are available for apprentices in the legal sector.

The firm, which has been established in the town centre for almost 40 years, employs just over 120 staff in both legal and support roles.

Stephanie Veysey, who has been responsible for recruiting a number of the apprentices,  said: “Many people wouldn’t automatically associate law with apprenticeships but our firm is large enough to be able to provide a range of high quality, on-the-job training for local people.

We currently have six apprentices training with us, working in a variety of different positions across the business, including legal, IT and administration.

Apprenticeships were introduced here at the firm because we feel they can play such an important role in developing a person’s career and they are open to almost anyone of any age. Not everyone is academically minded and so apprenticeships provide an alternative route to success.

While we can’t guarantee permanent positions at the end of their apprenticeship, all the apprentices will have developed an excellent skill set that will be of enormous benefit to them in pursuing their chosen career.

We are also about to begin offering internships for law students who are looking to gain experience during their summer breaks. “

Apprenticeship case study:

Lucy Baker (20) started her Legal Services Apprenticeship with Atherton Godfrey in March 2017.

Lucy said: “I originally started here as clerical assistant. That was a really good place to find out about the firm and the kind of work they do. Then I got the opportunity to train as a secretary in the Personal Injury department, which is where I first got really interested in law. The next step for me came last year when the firm offered me a litigation apprenticeship.

It’s a great place to learn. I’m getting lots of training and support and I’m already managing my own caseload.”
