On 25th May the Northern Racing College (NRC) held a presentation at our Student Graduation ceremony to celebrate reaching our target of our First ever NRC student fundraiser ‘The Defibrillator Fund’. Singer Lizzie Jones presented the defibrillator to the students and staff at NRC at the graduation and celebrating their fundraising efforts.
Northern Racing College has gratefully received £750 of funding from the Danny Jones Defibrillator Fund, to match the amount raised by our students to purchase an on-site Defibrillator. Lizzie Jones, widow of Danny Jones, attended to present the defibrillator as she has kindly donated the funding in memory of her late husband, a rugby player, who died from a heart condition.
Lizzie Jones is spearheading the Danny Jones Defibrillator Fund campaign to raise funds for equipment that could prove the difference between life and death at Rugby League clubs and other sporting organisations across the UK.
Danny Jones was a Keighley Cougars, and Wales International Rugby League player who collapsed and died from an undiagnosed heart condition on May 2015.
Lizzie says "I Knew I was going to marry Danny from the first time we went out. Losing him that day devastated the family. It just didn't occur to me that a seemingly fit & healthy athlete like Danny could ever be struck down with a heart condition. It goes to show that it can happen to anyone."
“I established Danny Jones Fund in memory of my husband to encourage organisations, initially rugby league clubs, to purchase a defibrillator that could save lives in an emergency. We’ve helped to provide over 100 defibrillators up and down the country and I’m delighted to have been able to match the fundraising efforts of learners and staff at the Northern Racing College. It is a wonderful organisation doing great work and it now has this important, life-saving facility on site.”
Colonel Stephen Padgett OBE, Chief Executive of the NRC quoted:-
“We are delighted to welcome Lizzie Jones to the Northern Racing College’s Graduation event today. The Fund established in memory of her late husband Danny has matched our students’ fund raising efforts allowing us to purchase a defibrillator that will be available for use in emergency by any of the many learners, staff, contractors and visitors on this extensive site. We train over 500 people per year for the horse racing industry, many of them on residential courses here, so to have now such a marvellous, life-saving capability on the premises is fantastic.”
