Phase two of Superfast South Yorkshire project launched

A £10 million extension to the SFSY project will see them working with Openreach to bring Full Fibre ‘ultrafast’ connections to over 9,000 homes and businesses across the region, providing speeds of up to 1 Gigabit (1Gbps), 24 times faster than the UK average of 46Mbps.

Full Fibre will help residents to make the most of their online opportunities for both work and play. Benefits include bufferless streaming of 4K video, seamless access to cloud services and uninterrupted video calls. Areas to be connected first include New Lodge in Barnsley, Bessacarr in Doncaster, Sunnyside in Rotherham, and High Green in Sheffield.

The new technology will complement ultrafast broadband coverage already available at business parks across the region, and business coverage will also be extended to priority business zones including Denaby Industrial Estate in Doncaster, Moor Valley in Sheffield, Steel Road in Rotherham, and Wharncliffe Business Park in Barnsley. This will give businesses easy access to data-intensive digital solutions which promote innovation and growth.

With detailed planning and survey work already underway the first Full Fibre connections will be live for 2020. Over 9,000 properties will be fully connected by spring 2021.

Planning for Phase 2 began with the launch of a Public Consultation in June 2017, full details of which can be found here.
