Quirky Choir celebrates an amazing 20th year with a new exhibition and film
Quirky Choir was set up as part of the launch of The Point twenty years ago. The group has gone from strength to strength, singing a huge variety of songs from around the world in all manner of venues across Doncaster and beyond. Thanks to Arts Council funding, the choir’s twentieth year has been spent creating a whole new repertoire of song in collaboration with some extremely talented artists and community groups.
Musicians Hayley Youell, Lucky Moyo, Luke Carver Goss and wordsmith Ian McMillian joined the choir along with Creative Directions, Swag Choir, Doncaster Conversation Club and Singing for Memory to write new pieces that relate directly to the people involved. Photographer James Mulkeen has been documenting the project, and filmmaker James Lockey has created a fascinating film exploring the journey of Quirky Choir and what singing with the choir means to its members.
The project has given Quirky Choir members a chance to think about their own journeys over the last twenty years and how much has changed locally and globally.
The new exhibition will be shown at The Point – home of darts (Doncaster Community Arts) – from 12th January to 23rd February. Gallery opening times and visitor information can be found here: https://www.thepoint.org.uk/visit/ Entry to the exhibition is free and open to all.
Janet Wood has been leading the Quirky Choir since it began. She said:
“We are a choir with a difference – there are no auditions and we are open to all. We believe that everyone can sing and that singing can have huge benefits for people’s health and wellbeing. This project has been a fantastic opportunity for us to really celebrate everything we have achieved over the past twenty years. We have had so much fun working with some amazing artists and groups and creating songs that are totally different to anything we have done before.”
Quirky Choir will round off their year of celebration with a concert at The Dome on Sunday 10th March at 7pm.
