A social media stir has been created by fifty Doncaster ladies who went topless to raise awareness of breast cancer and to encourage ladies, and men, to check and be aware of their breasts and breast tissue.
In just a matter of days since the photo was posted it has garnered over 1.7m views, 7,000 likes on LinkedIn, over 400 on Facebook, many reposts on Instagram and has been shared beyond belief reaching audiences in Qatar, Australia, USA and Canada to name just a few.
“This is exactly what we hoped we would achieve; more and more awareness of being breast aware, being body confident enough to check and get yourself checked if you suspect something is not right and dispelling any ‘shyness’ that is still associated with our breasts,” said Sarah Mullen organiser Equinox charity events.
“We all know that it is impossible to please everyone but if we manage to save just a few people from going through a diagnosis and cancer journey then we will feel justifiably very proud of what we have done and achieved by merely taking our tops off.”
Whilst some feedback has been critical, the majority has been hugely supportive with several men also using their comments to remind their male counterparts to also be body aware and check themselves regularly too and to remind everyone that breast cancer is not just something which affects females.
“At Equinox we recognise that males can receive a breast cancer diagnosis and that male specific cancers also need additional awareness campaigns – something which we are currently working on and which is very close to Paul and I at the moment,” said Sarah.
“All we want to do is continue to reinforce our messages, raise money for research and support, and to do this in a fun way that will make people sit up and take notice of what we hope to achieve!”
Since the inception of Equinox almost £300,000 has been raised for Cancer Research UK and Firefly; a Doncaster based cancer support charity.
Other events being held by Equinox in 2019 include a skydive, night walk and the iconic Equinox Ball in November.
