Zilco Ltd and Northern Racing College form partnership

Since 1987 the colours purple and green have been widely associated with the Northern Racing College. Fast forward to May 2019 and a meeting with Liz Burns, Sales Manager for Zilco Europe Ltd and light is shed on how these statement colours came to fruition and in turn became symbolic with the South Yorkshire based training provider which opened 35 years ago on 01 July.

Zilco is no stranger to the world of racing and Liz Burns is no stranger to the Northern Racing College for 32 years ago, in 1987, her racing career started at the Northern Racing College, then called the South Yorkshire Apprentice Racing Training School. During Barnsley born Liz’s time at the College her cohort were set a challenge to come up with suitable college colours which would then be worked into the college logo and branding. After much deliberation Liz’s suggestion of green and purple were chosen, incidentally these colours also reflected the colours of the South Yorkshire County Council which had been abolished a year earlier. Liz was proudly photographed being presented by Yorkshire Bank with horse attire in green and purple.

Graduating from the College Liz went on to pursue a long and successful career in the horse racing industry before moving into managerial roles and most recently joining the world-renowned synthetic bridle and saddle manufacturer, Zilco Europe Ltd.

Zilco, a staunch supporter of grass-root equestrian disciplines had identified in the Northern Racing College an organisation, much like their own, which has diversified and grown significantly in recent years. This synergy has led to the two organisations partnering by way of a sponsorship investment which sees the recently launched ‘Training Range’ of synthetic saddles and bridles being worn by half a dozen horses at the South Yorkshire training base.

Manufactured in matt brown with a leather look and feel Zilco’s renowned synthetic bridles and saddles are ideal for racehorse training proving to be tough and highly practical. The exercise saddles, both full and half tree, come with a two year guarantee. Designed to embrace the traditions long held in racing Zilco’s materials have proven strength, low maintenance and importantly a decreased risk of the spread of infection due to their ease of cleaning. Zilco are synonymous with challenging the boundaries and persuading the market of the many benefits of synthetic tack. Today, innovation and quality remains at the heart of the business.

The Northern Racing College, one of only two such training providers in the UK, is dedicated to giving anyone from the age of 16 with no previous equine experience or academic qualifications the opportunity to gain industry recognised qualifications and the prospect of gaining full-time employment in a racehorse trainer’s yard.  The College has diversified since it opened in 1984 to offer a range of courses that greatly enhance career prospects for the next generation of racing staff, jockeys, trainers, racing secretaries and racing personnel.  The training opportunities are vast including a course which supports the younger generation whilst still at school undertaking GCSE’s and also courses for those wishing to ride in Pony Races.

Sally Unwin, Zilco Europe’s Account Coordinator and Liz Burns, Sales Manager were extremely impressed with the facilities during their recent visit, “For Zilco Europe it is the perfect partnership and we are both proud and delighted to be supporting the College and its valued students by providing them with exercise saddles and bridlewear from our Training Range.  We look forward to developing our relationship,” Liz Burns.

Northern Racing College Fundraising Manager, Philippa Bonham is equally as delighted with the partnership, “We are pleased to have partnered with Zilco Europe a company who hold dear the same values and traditions we uphold. Their Training Range has received great reviews from our staff and students and ensures our horses look smart when out at exercise.”
